Science Fair 2011

Students from Fort Shaw Elemenary and Simms Schools competed on Wednesday, March 9 at the Great Falls Science and Engineering Fair. What a great team! Our schools did extremely well. I have attached a copy of the awards and a list of the students who will be traveling to Missoula on March 21st to compete at the State Science Fair.

Science Fair Update

We have been working on science fair for several weeks. You may have noticed their research paper assignments on the mid-terms you received last week.

Last week and until Christmas break we are working on organizing the projects. The students should have a list of materials they will need to complete thier experiments. They also have a rough draft of their procedure. Things are progressing nicely.

It would be helpful if the students could get started gathering the materials they will need. We have some supplies here that might be helpful, but in some cases (garages with beams, etc.) I don’t think we will be much help.

I will be available on Saturdays after Christmas (please let me know in advance so I can plan to be here) to help with experiments or paperwork.

SAT Challenge Academic Competition

The SAT Scholarship Administrator for Montana AGATE sent an email inviting “academically able and highly motivated seventh and eighth grade students to participate in the SAT Challence academic competition.”

Go to AGATE website to download some informational flyers.

There are prizes and scholarships available to top scoring students. We will be happy to help with any registration questions and practice tests, however students are responsible for making thier own arrangements to take the test.

The cost of the test is $47. Testing must be completed by January 31. There are several dates still available for students who want to take the test. Registration Deadlines are November 5 and December 23 for tests in December and January. The second informational sheet on the AGATE website (above) gives more details.

Its never too late to start planning for college – especially when it comes to financial aid.

Science Olympiad and Lego League

Lego League practices start Monday, September 27 after school in my classroom. We should have the field kit by then and can start building. Check out the challenges on line (Body Forward).

We have received the Science Olympiad Division B Rules Manual and the outlines for the challenges. Be ready to do some research or start building. We will meet Friday during lunch to go over the different topics and begin the sign up process.

Parent meeting for fund raising opportunities will be October 7, 2010 at 7:00pm in my classroom. I will bring treats

Science Olympiad

Once again we are going to compete in Bozeman in Science Olympiad. For those of you who are not familiar with this program, it consists of about 15 events and a team of 10. We study a variety of topics or build structures/planes according to predetermined plans. We then take our knowledge and head to Bozeman. Students go to different buildings and departments on campus to compete in their events. It is a wonderful way for students to experience a little bit of college life.

We leave on Monday and visit a department on campus. In the past we have gone rumin diving (sticking our arms into the side of cows to feel them digest food- smelly but fun), visited the Solar Science department and handled satellites being built there destined for space, toured the plant science building, visited the laser lab, and toured the weather station on top of the physics building. Each year we also take the students to the Museum of the Rockies. It is action packed and we are worn out when we get home- pizza on the bus and then some serious napping.

Check out the link to PBS television in Montana. There have been some very interesting programs relating to many of the science topics we have been working on in class. Exciting television with no commercials. Check out PBS when you can’t find anything else to watch, you won’t be disappointed.
